When my sister and I were younger, we used to fight over who would get shot gun in our dad’s car. Like all siblings, we’d yell at each other, call the other names and our dad, being the peacemaker that he is, would make us apologize to each other, even though we really didn’t mean it. But somehow hearing “I’m sorry” made it all better and we were able to co-exist with each other until our next argument.

In the past couple of months, there has been some outstanding news about youth violence in this country. Whether it is committed against another young person or adults- it seems that there is a news story at least every other month about some bizarre case of youth violence. These cases have ranged from violence toward family to violence being exhibited toward complete strangers in the street- prompting the question- what is going on with today’s youth?

The death of a 7-year-old - Aiyana Jones, an African-American girl at the hands of a Detroit police officer sounds more like something that would happen on an episode of Law and Order: Special Victims Unit than a headlining story on one’s local news. Interestingly enough, the police raid that resulted in this child’s death was being filmed by a camera crew for the A&E series- First 48. Various news reports state that the crew accompanied Detroit police to the house during a search for a suspect who allegedly killed a teenager.

During the past few weeks, we have heard and seen despairing images of the tragic situation that is occurring in Jamaica. For many Americans, the civil unrest that is reported has been an eye opener as well as a shocker. Jamaica has long been viewed as a popular vacation spot for many. Which brings the question of why, this has occurred.Politicians have wrecked this country from the 1960’s and continue to present day. In the 1970’s politicians imported guns and ammunitions for certain communities. I do not know the full motive but that initiative could not have had any good benefit. The gangs were used to implement this initiative were also used to intimidate the electorate to vote for a particular political party, to control communities, and were awarded government contracts.

WASHINGTON — Landmark health legislation won't be enough to reduce racial gaps in unemployment and health care, the National Urban League says in urging President Barack Obama to promote a "jobs surge" that targets hard-hit communities. In its annual "State of Black America" report being released Wednesday, the 100-year-old organization said African Americans had made gains in overall equality with whites as measured partly by their high voter turnout in 2008. Still, blacks lagged in homeownership rates and were almost twice as likely to be unemployed and lack health insurance.
